It is not the first time Novak Djokovic has proposed changes in tennis to make it more appealing, especially with the challenge of attracting younger audiences. In this regard, the Serbian has now put forward a revolutionary proposal: sets to four games, no-ad scoring, and matches lasting a maximum of two hours.
He said it in response to a question from Nick Coutracos on his podcast, and the Serb was blunt about the need to change the format of matches. “We must change the scoring system. Sets should no longer be played to six games, but to four. And I would also eliminate advantage. In best-of-five sets, this would keep matches to an approximate duration of two hours. Djokovic has been involved in epic matches lasting more than five hours. The latest of these was against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the last Wimbledon, a match in which he prevailed 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4) and 7-6(4), in 5 hours and 15 minutes. It was the longest quarterfinal and the fifth-longest match in the tournament’s history.
A few weeks ago, Djokovic proposed possible changes. “How do we attract the new generations? Maybe they watch the Grand Slams, but not much else. They are not going to sit for four or five hours a day watching tennis. Their attention span is different and we have to understand how the market works,” he said at the time.
