DJ LeMahieu is injured in his Spring Training debut and adds to the Yankees’ hospital list

New York Yankees’ preseason has become a nightmare for manager Aaron Boone with a series of injuries that will make it difficult for him to have a full roster for Opening Day on March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The injured list opened with Giancarlo Stanton, then Trent Grisham, Everson Pereira and pitcher Scott Effross also went out of circulation after injuring his hamstring.

The Bronx Bombers’ misfortune was compounded by starting pitcher Luis Gil,and on Saturday the Yankees’ hospital grew with third baseman DJ LeMahieu, who injured his left calf in his Spring Training debut

DJ LeMahieu is out in his second at-bat

LeMahieu, who was serving as the designated hitter, was injured Saturday in his second at-bat in New York’s 9-3 victory over the Houston Astros

“That’s not ideal, with everything he’s had to face,” manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “We’ll see what we have there and see how important it is. These things in the soft tissues have popped up on him, so it’s at least a little bit concerning.”

It is the latest in a series of injuries for the 36-year-old, who finished last season on the injured list with a right hip injury after missing the first few months of the season after fracturing his right foot with a foul ball in spring training.

Those injuries limited him to just 67 games last season, where he hit a career-worst .204 batting average with just two home runs and 26 RBIs.

LeMahieu, who has two years remaining on a six-year, $90 million contract he signed in 2021, was the favorite to be New York’s starting third baseman. If this injury keeps him out for an extended period of time, the Yankees will need Oswaldo Cabrera or Oswald Peraza to step up and fill the void.
