Rute Cardoso has shared an emotional tribute to her late husband, Diogo Jota, as Father’s Day approaches in Portugal. Her message reflects both grief and remembrance, marking the first time the family faces the occasion without the former Liverpool FC forward.

Jota, who died in a tragic car accident last July alongside his brother Andre Silva, left behind his wife and three children.

The loss has continued to resonate deeply, especially given how recently the couple had celebrated their marriage.

In a heartfelt gesture, Rute took part in a 10km race in Porto, and she wore the number 20, linking the moment to Jota‘s Liverpool shirt, while also creating a personal way to honour his memory through action and reflection.

’20+[an eternal emoji], Father’s Day race,’ Rute wrote on social media.

The message captured both simplicity and meaning, as supporters responded with encouragement and messages that echoed the enduring connection fans still feel.

She completed the course in just over 52 minutes, and notably this was not the first time she had used running as a tribute.

She previously took part in another race while referencing Jota‘s number in a similar symbolic way.

The connection between number and distance has become a recurring theme, and by combining those elements, she has found a way to commemorate his presence, while also maintaining a sense of continuity in the face of profound loss.

Liverpool fans still pay tribute Jota

Tributes to Jota have extended far beyond his family, as Liverpool supporters continue to honour him during matches, and the club itself made the significant decision to retire his number 20 shirt across all teams.

That gesture, along with continued chants in his memory, highlights the lasting impression he made, while the club’s ownership also pledged support to his family, including honouring the remainder of his contract as a sign of commitment.

The circumstances of Jota‘s passing were sudden and devastating, as the accident occurred in north-western Spain, and both he and his brother were killed when their vehicle left the road during an overtaking manoeuvre.

According to reports, a tyre blowout caused the car to lose control, and it subsequently caught fire, and the incident took place shortly after midnight, bringing an abrupt end to the life of a player still in his prime.

Jota had only recently married Rute, and the couple had shared moments from their ceremony just days before the tragedy, making the loss even more difficult for those closest to him and those who followed his career.

A fans’ favorite

During his time at Liverpool, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, and he played a key role in major successes, including domestic cup victories and a league title, establishing himself as a vital contributor.

Before that, he built his reputation at Wolves, where he impressed with consistent scoring, and his journey through Portuguese football, including early development and international appearances, reflected steady progression.

His impact extended to the national team as well, and with 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal, he contributed on the international stage, leaving behind a legacy defined by determination, talent, and moments that continue to be remembered.
