Dillon Brooks was on the brink of a career-defining season with the Phoenix Suns, but it has taken an unexpected turn after the veteran forward was arrested on suspicion of DUI (driving under influence) in Scottsdale, Arizona. The development comes as Brooks was already sidelined with a fractured hand that has kept him out of action for several weeks.
Despite the off-court incident, Brooks addressed the situation internally by apologizing to his teammates on the Suns.
Several players publicly voiced their support for the 30-year-old forward, emphasizing accountability and the human element behind the mistake. Guard Colin Gillespie explained that the locker room remains supportive of their teammate.
“Just hate to see it for him, but he’s human. We’re all humans,” Colin Gillespie said.
“We’re not above anybody else. We all make mistakes. He knows that. He owned it He apologized to the team, but we got his back. Human beings make mistakes, we all make mistakes. Learn from it.
“He’s just in the public eye more than any other regular human being. That stuff goes on every day and you just don’t hear about it from other people because it’s not ‘Dillon Brooks‘ per se.”
While Brooks attended team activities on Friday, he declined to speak publicly to reporters following the incident.
Another teammate, guard Grayson Allen, indicated that the forward is still processing the situation and will speak when he feels ready.
“I know he feels really bad about it,” Allen said. “I’m sure whenever he feels like he needs to say something, he’ll say something.
“But we’re still focusing on what we can do on the court with him out. We want to get him back and hold it down in the meantime.”
Why was Brooks arrested?
Per TMZ, Brooks was arrested around 02:00 local time on Friday, March 6, in Scottsdale under suspicion of driving under the influence.
He was reportedly released from custody at approximately 03:20 after cooperating with authorities during the process.
Additional reports indicated that officers initially stopped Brooks for a traffic violation south of Thunderbird Road before arresting him on suspicion of DUI and transporting him to Scottsdale City Jail.
Footage obtained by AZ Family from body cameras showed officers referencing the smell of marijuana in the vehicle while also acknowledging Brooks‘ existing hand injury during the arrest.
Officers reportedly handled the situation carefully while placing him in handcuffs.
Suns stay coy on the matter
The Suns organization has so far offered limited public commentary regarding the arrest. In an official statement, the team confirmed awareness of the situation but declined to provide additional details.
“We are aware of the situation involving Dillon Brooks and are gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time,” the Suns said.
Head coach Jordan Ott also avoided discussing specifics about the incident when speaking to reporters, reiterating that the organization’s statement would remain the team’s official response for now.
“I know you’re going to have questions about the Dillon Brooks event last night. That’s why we sent out the statement. We’re going to continue, I’m going to continue to refer to the statement.”
“My focus here is on a back-to-back. We obviously didn’t play great last night. All of our energy and focus is gonna be moving forward and trying to win tonight.”
Despite the controversy, teammates on the Suns team have indicated that the team remains focused on supporting Brooks while awaiting his return from injury and the resolution of the legal situation.
