One of the most powerful and intriguing moves of the MLB offseason was undoubtedly the New York Mets signing of Bo Bichette. The shortstop joined the franchise after inking a three-year, $126 million contract that includes a $40 million signing bonus.
It’s no secret that Bichette landed in New York after the Mets failed to secure Kyle Tucker, who ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This prompted a swift pivot by the Mets to snatch Bichette away from the Philadelphia Phillies, whose negotiations with him had reportedly advanced significantly.
Did he really want to play for the Mets?
That’s the big question many fans asked when the deal came together so quickly. However, president of baseball operations David Stearns knew he couldn’t pass up the chance to add such elite talent.
Adding fuel to the discussion, Bichette’s father, Dante Bichette, recently revealed in an interview with The New York Post that his son had long wanted to test the New York market. “Bo has always wanted to try playing in New York,” Dante said.
He added that Bo believed succeeding in a high-pressure city like New York meant you could thrive anywhere, and the intense media spotlight and exposure were key factors in ultimately choosing the Mets.
Bichette arrives from the Toronto Blue Jays, where he was the everyday shortstop. Now, with Francisco Lindor firmly entrenched at shortstop for the Mets, Bichette must adapt to third base-a position change that once raised concerns.
To truly gauge Bichette’s impact in New York, we’ll have to wait for the MLB regular season, where he’ll undoubtedly be one of the most scrutinized players given the massive investment the Mets made in him.
