In Detroit, there are postseason illusions for the 2026 campaign and they are trying to do everything they can to make that happen. They know that with Tarik Skubal there is a chance to do so, but they need experience around him to accompany him on that mission.
The pitcher is in his final year with the Tigers. He will be the most sought-after free agent next offseason. That’s why the franchise wants to take advantage of the opportunity to have him in its ranks to go as far as possible in the playoffs.
Lucas Giolito was one of the pitchers on their radar, along with Chris Bassitt. MLB insider Jon Heyman indicated that both players were practically tied to go to Detroit. However, as is often the case in the winter market, everything changed at the last minute and his name has lost momentum.
It seemed a done deal that Giolito, who is one of the second-tier (non-elite) free agents still listening to offers these days, would join the Tigers. He is interested in the organization’s project to surround Skubal and put together a solid roster that aspires to be a big surprise.
The board of directors changed its plans and focused its interest on two other players who have qualified arms for the rotation, Nick Martinez and Jose Quintana.
Tigers go for Nick Martinez and Jose Quintana
Recent rumors suggest that Detroit is negotiating with Nick Martinez and Jose Quintana. Both pitchers are looking for a team and are attracted to the idea of the Tigers with Skubal at the helm. At the moment, the team needs a mid-level starter. Drew Anderson was their most recent addition and Jack Flaherty will remain with the team.Case Mize and Reese Olson will sit behind Skubal in the rotation. Adding one or two more arms would give the roster security and greater opportunities. The Tigers will want to save every penny for Skubal before he enters free agency.
While the offseason has not been up to par, they still have a solid roster heading into 2026. For now, Martinez and Quintana could be a perfect fit for the roster.
