Details revealed about the severity of Kodai Senga’s injury and his possible return date with the Mets

The Mets have shown a consistent level throughout the season, however, they have had serious setbacks, mainly the injury of one of the most important names in their squad: Kodai Senga.

The Japanese pitcher is considered one of the pillars of the New York Mets starting rotation, however, he is currently out of action after suffering a strain in his left hamstring during a defensive play on June 12.

What happened to Kodai Senga?

The incident occurred when he was trying to cover first base and, stretching to receive a high throw from Pete Alonso, fell forcefully on the base, immediately dropping to the ground with a visible look of pain, causing immediate alarm.

Subsequently, after being placed on the 15-day disabled list, an MRI revealed a grade 1 strain, the least severe of this type of injury, so the diagnosis was received with relief by the team, as a more serious injury was feared.

When will Kodai Senga return?

According to manager Carlos Mendoza, there is optimism about his recovery: “We feel it’s relatively good news… It’s a mild strain. We hope he’s symptom-free and we can have him back soon.”

Due to this injury, Kodai Senga would miss at least five weeks of action, which would delay his return until mid-July, just before the MLBAll-Star Game break

Kodai Senga stats

Senga has been a key piece for the Mets this season, as in 2024, he has a 7-3 record, with an outstanding 1.47 ERA, 70 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP, ranking among the best pitchers in the National League.

His meticulous approach to the rehabilitation process has been highlighted by Mendoza, who said he is in constant communication with the player and is confident of a smooth recovery.

Kodai Senga’s injury history

Senga’s injury history this season includes a series of issues that delayed his debut until July 26, including triceps soreness, nerve inflammation and a right shoulder strain. He then suffered a high-grade strain in his left calf, which sidelined him until the postseason. On this occasion, however, the prognosis is more encouraging.

While Senga recovers, the Mets are going through a tough time. Despite leading the National League East Division with a 45-27 record, the team was swept by the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend, including a 9-0 loss on Sunday. However, the situation is expected to improve with the impending return of other key pitchers.
