Deshaun Watson breaks silence after returning to Browns practice

Deshaun Watson made his long-awaited return to Cleveland Browns practice this week, taking a major step in his recovery from the season-ending Achilles injury he suffered last November.

For a franchise navigating inconsistency under center and a fanbase anxious for clarity, seeing Watson back in helmet and pads offered a long-absent sense of optimism.

The Browns officially opened his 21-day practice window and, while his return does not mean he is fully cleared to play, the presence of the three-time Pro Bowler on the field again marks a significant checkpoint.

Watson arrived in Cleveland in 2022 via a blockbuster trade, which hasn’t gone to plan.

He started the first seven games of the 2024 season, passing for 1,148 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 148 rushing yards with a score. But the Browns went 1-6 in those starts.

Overall, the former Pro Bowler has a 9-10 record as the starter in Cleveland, passing for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. With that in mind, it points to why the organization drafted two talented players as future replacements.

Will the quarterback carousel reach Watson?

Yet, the Browns have spent the season rotating through options at quarterback, trying combinations behind center while planning for the possibility of Watson returning late in the regular season or postseason.

Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders have all had starting reps for the Browns during Watson’s spell out injured, but the Browns are yet to find their true QB1 to continue on with.

Pickett and Flacco have since moved on to the Las Vegas Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals, while Gabriel and Sanders have displayed some rawness in their first games as rookies for Cleveland.

While coaches and medical staff have tempered expectations over Watson, the milestone of practicing again allows the organization to envision what a full-strength offensive unit could look like heading into 2025.

The decision for surgery last fall came after Watson sustained a displaced fracture in his throwing shoulder in addition to the Achilles damage. The dual challenge forced a methodical recovery plan with no shortcuts.

Teammates have praised his supporting presence, with Watson contributing in meetings, maintaining relationships, and offering insight to younger players. The Browns coaching staff has reiterated that his leadership has remained valuable even without snaps.

However, head coach Kevin Stefanski has tempered expectations on when he could play, with no set timetable for live action: “He’ll be out there today, which is outstanding for Deshaun,” Stefanski said.

“He’s has been working so hard, rehabbing, so finally to get out there on the practice field with his teammates to go through individual, I think this is really great for him. So, excited for him.

“His focus, my focus is obviously getting him back to playing football, practicing football, which he hasn’t done in over a year. So, it’s a good next step for him.”

What it means for Cleveland going forward

For a franchise with long-term commitment to Watson as its quarterback, minimizing risk remains crucial.

The Browns enter the final stretch with playoff aspirations still mathematically alive, but evaluations are geared more toward the future.

Players who came to Cleveland expecting to play alongside Watson finally saw glimpses of that future take shape again.

For the fans, the moment represents both hope and caution. For Deshaun Watson, it is a public exhale after months of silence, solitude, and unseen progress.

And now, at last, he’s doing some of that work back where it matters most on the field with the Cleveland Browns.
