Denver Broncos’ turning point? John Elway weighs in on Bo Nix and Sean Payton

John Elway does not often discuss the Denver Broncos in detail anymore, not since stepping back from the front office.

So when he offered a pointed, optimistic assessment of Bo Nix and Sean Payton this week, it immediately carried weight.

Elway, speaking on the After the Horn podcast, said what many in Denver have quietly wondered: the Broncos‘ rookie quarterback may finally have the right coach beside him, and the early signs of that partnership point to something the franchise has not felt in years… stability.

Elway‘s view of Nix was measured but encouraging. Early in the season, he said, the young quarterback looked as though the league was “moving really, really fast,” a reflection of the steep learning curve that comes with running Payton‘s rhythm-based offense.

But in recent weeks, Elway has noticed a shift. Nix looks calmer. His footwork is cleaner. His decision-making no longer feels rushed.

“He has all the tools,” Elway said, noting the rare advantage of having started more than sixty games in college.

He even revealed he watched Nix‘s win over the Kansas City Chiefs on his phone while playing in a golf tournament, impressed by how composed the rookie appeared in the fourth quarter.

And Elway‘s advice for navigating the pressure of a nine and two start was blunt: ignore the chatter and just keep winning.

Why Elway believes Payton is unlocking the right version of Nix

But Elway reserved some of his strongest praise for Sean Payton, calling him not just a gifted play designer but a “psychologist” who understands how to manage the emotional load on a quarterback.

The Broncos legend pointed to last season as proof, when Payton reshaped the offense step by step until it fit the strengths of his players. With Nix now in that system, Elway believes the development curve is unfolding exactly as it should.

That belief comes at a moment when the Broncos offense itself has been under scrutiny. Despite their record, the unit has looked disjointed at times, and the tension between Nix wanting a faster tempo and Payton preferring structure was clear during their midseason struggles.

Cameras caught Nix signaling urgently to the sideline for quicker play calls and linemen telling reporters they needed to “change the tempo.”

The turning point came after halftime against Kansas City. On the opening drive of the third quarter, Denver leaned into no huddle sequences, allowing Nix to reach the line earlier in the play clock.

That shift gave him time to read the defense, communicate adjustments and play with the timing he thrived on in college.

The drive ended in a touchdown and, more importantly, restored the connection between coach and quarterback. To Elway, that was not accidental. It was the offense finally functioning at the speed Nix needs.

What Elway’s endorsement signals for Denver

Elway acknowledged he has not spent extensive time around Nix, but watching from afar, and watching the noise around the rookie grow, has been enough for him to form a belief about the Broncos‘ direction.

He sees a mentally tough, experienced young passer paired with a head coach who knows how to insulate a quarterback from pressure. And he sees a team that is no longer waiting for the late-game mistake, but expecting to make the winning play.

The next challenge, Elway said, is the mental side of the job: slowing the moment down, blocking out criticism and stacking wins without overthinking the aesthetics.

Coming from a quarterback who endured his own early-career growing pains before winning two Super Bowls, the message resonates in Denver.

For now, Elway‘s assessment acts as something of a temperature check. It suggests that the Broncos, for the first time in years, may have found the right combination at the two most important positions in the building.

And if Nix continues trending upward while Payton shapes the scheme around him, the question hanging over Denver could shift from whether the pairing works to just how far it can take them.
