Deion Sanders’ strategy with his quarterbacks in Colorado is a straight message to Kevin Stefanski about Shedeur Sanders

In an attempt to innovate in his football with a quarterback rotation, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders created ripples this week with his unprecedented move, one that most perceive as a direct message towards the NFL, and to be more precise, at Cleveland Browns’ head coach Kevin Stefanski, in regards to his son Shedeur Sanders and his current situation.

Shedeur is not having his best times at Colorado and that could be one of the reasons behind people thinking Deion’s move was aimed at Stefanski. As a former Colorado player, Shedeur arrived to Colorado this summer in order to make his debut in the NFL. What was meant to be a path of happiness is starting to look like a bad dream.

A bold rotation in Week 2

During Colorado’s recent 31-7 victory against Delaware, Sanders provided the team with many quarterback rotations, providing playing time to Ryan Staub, Kaidon Salter, and freshman Julian Lewis. Staub, Shedeur’s backup, completed 7 of 10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, being crucial by helping seal the victory.

When asked why he did not possess a “solidified” starter, Sanders responded: “We play quarterbacks every week. What does a solidified quarterback look like?” He went on to mention Shedeur Sanders, complimenting his skills and his always-prepared mentality. Analysts interpreted it as an open confirmation to NFL franchises that Shedeur is ready to embrace a professional position in the team.

Shedeur Sanders situation in the NFL

Shedeur Sanders now sits as a third string quarterback below veterans Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel. Even with limited time on the field, he has remained active during practice and team drills, showing his great grit and flexibility with his transition to the pro level.

His father, Coach Prime, never underestimated the hard work and grit, something that Shedeur still does as he faces the rapidity and sophistication of the playing style of a competition like the NFL.

A father’s strategic advocacy

Deion Sanders’ strategy at Colorado seems to be a double advantage: He is putting his team in perfect conditions at the same time he advocates for his son’s true potential at elite levels. By promoting his rotation concept and Shedeur seeking more plays, Deion is in effect saying something to Stefanski and NFL decision-makers: Shedeur Sanders is worth.

“This is about highlighting talent and preparing for the future,” said Peter Burns, a program insider. “Coach Prime trusts his players, and he’s not afraid to make sure the world sees what Shedeur can do.”

As Colorado continues to face the challenges of their season, the quarterback rotation scheme will remain one of the things of interest for analysts and NFL scouts. Shedeur Sanders’ preseason and practice play will meanwhile come under scrutiny as he fights for the privilege of playing on the pro scenes.
