David Stearns leaves a Mets legend speechless after a disastrous week that saw them lose Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz

The Winter Meetings have come to an end, and it’s safe to say that the New York Mets‘ offseason has been nothing like what was expected – in fact, they’ve had one of the worst offseasons of any team, and their fans have been put through absolute misery.

David Stearns leaves a Mets legend speechless after a disastrous week that saw them lose Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz

In just two and a half weeks, the Mets have watched three of their cornerstone players walk away without truly replacing them with any high-profile talent. So far, Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Díaz, and Pete Alonso have all left – moves that are simply inexplicable if the goal was to contend for a World Series.

Even though the offseason isn’t over yet, president of baseball operations David Stearns has already become one of the most hated figures in New York.

A Mets legend speaks out about the moves

On Wednesday, Keith Hernandez appeared on SportsNite on SNY and didn’t hold back at all when discussing the state of the organization after their best closer signed with the Dodgers and Pete Alonso inked a five-year, $155 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles.

“I’m a little bit speechless,” Hernandez said. “This is very explosive. In all the years I’ve been with the Mets, I have not seen this kind of moving in a new direction, I guess. It is profound.”

The New York Mets missed the playoffs in 2025 and blew a big division lead in the NL East. Over the last five seasons, they’ve made the postseason just twice.

Beyond the star players they’ve lost – who will leave a massive negative impact on the roster – the Mets have acquired Marcus Semien and Devin Williams this offseason.

Among the notable names still available on the market are Pete Fairbanks, Cody Bellinger, Michael King, and Kyle Tucker. We’ll see if management can actually land one of them.

The Mets will open the 2026 season against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the latest moves suggest it’s going to be anything but easy – and they’ll have to fight much harder than expected.
