David Stearns discourages Vladimir Guerrero Jr. by suggesting he will not follow in the footsteps of Juan Soto or Shohei Ohtani

They say that ‘the master’s eye fattens the horse’ and this wise saying can be applied to the president of the New York Mets, David Stearns, who recently had discouraging words for another of the players who has what it takes to break the market as the Dominican Juan Soto did in this offseason, in his move from the Yankees to the Queens team

Fans are wondering which player could land a record contract next season, after Japan’s Shohei Ohtani did so a year ago with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Juan Soto did so very recently with the New York Mets

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has what it takes to break the market

In this free agency, if someone is really pricing themselves high, it is the Dominican Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who with the Toronto Blue Jays has given proof of being worthy of one of those contracts that break the market and establish new paradigms in the Major Leagues. However, Stearns’ voice was heard on the subject and he was skeptical and incredulous about Guerrero’s ability to become another case of millionaire hiring in the ‘Big Top’.

Obviously, Stearns was cautious and compared Guerrero to Juan Soto, and it is evident that the son of the Hall of Famer was going to lose out, as Soto surpasses almost in all aspects the Blue Jays player. However, Guerrero has numbers that speak for themselves and at 25 years of age and with just five years in the Majors, he was already the home run leader in 2021, chosen in four All-Star Games, winner of two Silver Slugger Awards and in the season that ended he closed with 30 home runs and 103 runs batted in.

Why doesn’t Stearns think Guerrero can do it?

This is what David Stearns told journalist Pablo Torre: “Regardless of how deep the pockets of an organization are, you can’t do multiple contracts like this. In terms of these generational contracts, you probably have one shot,” Stearns said

And the Mets executive is right about one thing: his team or the Dodgers could no longer offer a contract like the ones they gave to Soto or Ohtani, as it is financially unfeasible, but in this he is wrong, there are other franchises, also with a lot of money, who would be willing to make certain sacrifices to have a player of Guerrero’s caliber in their ranks next offseason.
