Dave Roberts is on track to be the highest-paid manager in MLB history

The contract extension that Dave Roberts signed in 2022 is entering its final year and requires the Los Angeles Dodgers to sit down with him to negotiate once and for all, and what better argument than the recent World Series title on the table.

Reports from Glendale, Arizona, where the Los Angeles team has its Spring Training, claim that negotiations are on track now that hiring has ceased and roster formation is a reality, something that general manager Brandon Gomes used as an ‘excuse’ not to address the issue a few months ago.

Dave Roberts’ contract extension is a ‘done deal’

The topic was inevitable and perhaps it was postponed too long, but it is never too late to do good business, and certainly Roberts’ permanence with the Dodgers is one of them. If the 2024 championship trophy was not enough, this confirms the commitment of the Angels’ president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, who a year ago spoke out for continuity.

The new deal is expected to surpass the record annual value for a manager in Major League history, a record held by Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell, who signed the most lucrative contract in MLB history for that position in 2024: five years and $40 million (about $8 million per year).

News expected before trip to Japan

The trip to Tokyo for the Dodgers’ season-opening games is just around the corner (March 18 and 19) and the team can’t leave without resolving this outstanding issue, so it is a fact that there will be news by early next week at the latest.

The Dodgers and the baseball world know that this is inevitable, and that it is only a matter of time before Roberts becomes the highest-paid manager in Major League history, as he deserves to have his $3.5 million per season salary more than doubled.
