Few debates in the NFL world ignite more passion than comparing dynasties, and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy just added fresh fuel to the fire. In a video posted on X, the outspoken Patriots diehard doubled down on his belief thatTom Brady’s New England Patriots would dismantle Patrick Mahomes’Kansas City Chiefs in a hypothetical matchup. Calling himself a “Patriots historian,” Portnoy didn’t just argue his case-he came armed with receipts.
Super Bowl LIX Special: Everything you need to know about Eagles vs Chiefs?
“I respect the Chiefs,”Portnoy stated. “I’ve never had a problem with greatness. I hump greatness. Mahomes is great. This Chiefs team is great. If they win the Super Bowl this year, I think you can say this is the greatest season of all time – a one-loss season, a three-peat. You could argue it’s the greatest dynasty of all time by winning three in a row, which nobody’s done.”
But despite the accolades he threw Kansas City’s way, Portnoy insists there’s no debate when it comes to a direct comparison. “The Patriots obviously,”he declared. “I won’t hear any other arguments. It’s pretty clean-cut.” The foundation of his claim? Brady’s track record against Mahomes and legendary coach Bill Belichick’s dominance over Andy Reid.

Portnoy cited Brady’s 2-0 playoff record against Mahomes, referencing New England’s thrilling overtime victory at Arrowhead in the 2018 AFC Championship Game and Brady’s Super Bowl LV beatdown of the Chiefs while playing for Tampa Bay. “And the facts are, [Brady] never lost to Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs,”Portnoy emphasized. “He beat him in the Super Bowl with the Bucs. He’s clearly the better quarterback. The Patriots went into Arrowhead, beat Mahomes, went on to win a Super Bowl. 2-0. Can’t argue that.”
Belichick vs. Reid: A lopsided playoff rivalry
Portnoy also leaned on Belichick’s history of playoff success against Andy Reid. The Patriots legend outdueled Reid in three postseason encounters: Super Bowl XXXIX when Reid was coaching Philadelphia, and playoff victories against Kansas City in 2015 and 2018. “All three times, Belichick beat him,”Portnoy said. “Beat him in the Super Bowl when Andy Reid was [with] the Eagles, and the Eagles puked all over themselves. Donovan McNabb literally puking, that’s a reflection of Andy Reid: puking.”
While Portnoy’s argument relies on head-to-head results, it’s worth noting that Mahomes’ Chiefs are on the verge of unprecedented history. With a Super Bowl LIX win over the San Francisco 49ers, Mahomes would capture his third straight championship and fourth overall-an achievement even Brady never accomplished. As ESPN’s Bill Barnwell noted, Mahomes’ postseason dominance is already approaching Brady’s level, with the Chiefs star leading his team to the AFC Championship Game in every full season as a starter.
However, Brady’s longevity and unparalleled Super Bowl success remain tough to match. At 37, he won his fourth Super Bowl in 2014, then went on to secure three more championships in his 40s. According to Pro Football Focus, his ability to win across multiple eras and adapt to different team dynamics cemented his legacy. The Chiefs, meanwhile, still have work to do to catch up to the Patriots’ six-ring dynasty.
Ultimately, Portnoy’s take may be more about protecting his team’s legacy than a true X’s and O’s breakdown. But with Mahomes chasing history, the debate is far from settled. And if Kansas City lifts another Lombardi Trophy, the conversation about the greatest dynasty of all time will only intensify.
