The NFL season is about to get underway, and Jerry Jones got exactly what he wanted. The theory that the Dallas Cowboys owner only wants to keep his franchise’s name in the national media conversation, over actually winning a Super Bowl, seemed to be proven right this offseason. And it led to an explosive conclusion.
A week before the start of the regular season, Jones shipped off defensive star Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. That move has been universally panned, but the Cowboys were the topic of conversation up until the very end. And now they can try to shut everyone’s mouth by coming out for the very first NFL game of the season and beating the Philadelphia Eagles. While that may be a tall task, it seems very possible thanks to recent history.
Cowboys beat Eagles as road underdogs last time Philly were defending champions
The last time the Eagles came into a new season as defending champions, they also hosted the Cowboys as big favorites. That was back in 2018, and they were 7.5 point favorites. This time around, they are 8.5 point favorites. The silver lining for Dallas? They won that game back in 2018.
Dak Prescott threw for 270 yards and Ezekiel Elliott ran for 151 yards that night. Both teams had losing records at the time, so the situation is different now. They are also much different rosters, with the Eagles currently stacked with talent and the Cowboys losing more than they’ve gained
Regardless, divisional games are always contentious no matter the state of teams’ rosters. This season’s opening game should be no exception.
