Cris Carter takes the wind out of Bill Belichick’s sails when she reminds him that he would be a mediocre coach without Tom Brady

Bill Belichick‘s move to North Carolina was supposed to play out differently.

After nearly 50 years navigating the NFL sideline, he arrived in Chapel Hill with the sort of résumé that usually forces stability onto a program by sheer presence.

But the season never found its footing. Instead, UNC drifted through a 4-8 campaign filled with uneven play and distractions that only made the losses feel heavier.

And with every passing week, many wonder how much of his greatness was tied to Tom Brady. Cris Carter gave the blunt version of what many others have hinted at for years.

“Tom Brady brought out the best in Belichick,” Carter said. “When Brady‘s not in the building with him, he is an average to below-average coach.” He did note that both men were “very, very good” and that neither would have piled up championships without the other, but the unfiltered part of the comment is what stuck. It always does.

The timing did not help Belichick. UNC closed its regular season with a 42-19 loss to N.C. State, finishing 2-6 in the conference.

That alone would have been enough to stir unrest. Yet the program also found itself wrestling with off-field storylines, including attention surrounding Belichick‘s partner, Jordon Hudson, which added another layer of noise that lingered through the fall.

After the final whistle of the season, several key players entered the transfer portal, a move that reflected more than just disappointment with results. Something in the foundation had cracked.

A shifting narrative as Belichick faces turbulence unlike anything from his NFL career

Belichick has said he plans to stay through 2026, and the lack of activity from NFL teams likely reinforces that decision for now.

Since the Patriots dismissed him after the 2023 season, he has been granted just one interview across two full hiring cycles. For a coach who once felt inevitable whenever a major job opened, the silence has become a story of its own.

Part of that stems from what happened after Brady left New England. Brady won a championship in Tampa Bay. Belichick struggled to build anything comparable without his longtime quarterback.

Those outcomes feed directly into today’s conversation, and UNC‘s early struggles have only made the comparisons louder. Fair or not, every misstep becomes evidence for those who believe Brady was the engine behind the dynasty.
