Cowboys’ passing offense with Dak Prescott gets major dose of hope despite middling season opener

Through the first two days of the 2025 NFL season, there are two winners and two losers so far. The Kansas City Chiefs followed in the Dallas Cowboys‘ footsteps. Both teams held strong for the duration of their games, but they didn’t make enough plays to come out victorious.

In the Chiefs’ case, their defense couldn’t get stops against Justin Herbert. For the Cowboys, the biggest issue was surprisingly CeeDee Lamb dropping several passes that could have changed the outcome of the game. Those who didn’t watch the Thursday night game, or had it on in the background, may believe that Dak Prescott and the Dallas passing offense played poorly and are a cause for concern. But as the underlying numbers show, that actually isn’t the case at all.

Dak Prescott played much better than it seemed against Eagles in season opener

Fantasy football analyst Scott Barrett of Fantasy Points Data came out to quash the idea that Prescott had a bad game on Thursday night. In fact, the advanced stats showcase extremely promising signs going forward.

Basically, Prescott was putting the ball on the money all game long. Drops from pass-catchers, as well as a long defensive pass interference on a bomb to George Pickens, kept the Cowboys’ quarterback from having a truly huge game through the air.

Coming into the 2025 season, the general sentiment was that Dallas’ passing offense was going to dominate and try to keep up in high-scoring games. While that didn’t necessarily happen in Week 1, there should be no concerns about their efficiency going forward.
