Cowboys choose their offensive coordinator and it won’t be Jason Witten

Just as coach Mike McCarthy did the year before, his successor at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer, will be in charge of play-calling. However, on Friday the Cowboys named their offensive coordinator, Klayton Adams, who has NFL experience as the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive line coach

Adams, 41, comes to the Steelers after serving in the same position with the Cardinals for the past two seasons and has a good reputation in the league as a ground attack designer. In 2024, the Cardinals had the seventh-best rushing offense in the league, averaging 144.2 yards per game and were second in yards per carry with 5.3.

Their starting running back, James Conner, rushed for 1,094 yards and eight touchdowns for Arizona in 2024, which had a disastrous season. While the Cowboys were led by Rico Dowdle, who will be an unrestricted free agent, with 1,079 yards and only two touchdowns. The Cowboys had only six rushing touchdowns in the campaign, after the ground attack took a long time to get going in the season.

The Cowboys are also expected to hire an offensive line coach, one for running backs and another for wide receivers

Before joining Arizona, Adams spent four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, in charge of the tight ends and as an assistant on the offensive line.

In addition to Adams, the Cowboys interviewed Detroit Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery and Atlanta Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger. They also had conversations with former Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey.

Cowboys staff vacancies

With the hiring of Adams, the Cowboys have now filled all of their coordinator vacancies, after confirming Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen.

The team interviewed New Orleans running backs coach Derrick Foster on Thursday, according to a source. Former Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten is also expected to join the Cowboys’ coaching staff in some capacity, although there has been no formal approach at this time

However, for the position of tight ends coach, Schottenheimer chose Lunda Wells, in fact it was his first choice on the coaching staff, once he received the appointment

Wells arrived with McCarthy to the Cowboys in 2020 after eight seasons with the New York Giants. Schottenheimer joined Dallas as a consultant in 2022 and was promoted to replace McCarthy after two years as offensive coordinator.

Wells was the Giants’ tight ends coach for his last two seasons before accepting the same job with the Cowboys.
