Cowboys already negotiating another contract days after letting Micah Parsons go

After completing the surprising trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys have already begun to build a new era with strategic renewals. They first signed a four-year, $92 million extension to All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland, including $50 million guaranteed. Now, the focus moves to the other side of the ball, protecting the quarterback.

According to reports from Clarence Hill, the Cowboys are already negotiating a new extension with offensive guard Tyler Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro. Jerry Jones’ goal is to get the deal done before kickoff, although the deal could be signed at any time during the season.

Tyler Smith could break a Dallas trend in rookie negotiations

Historically, the Cowboys have been conservative in renewing their first-round picks as soon as they become extension eligible. According to RJ Ochoa of Blogging the Boys, if Smith’s new deal is finalized soon, it would be the first time Dallas has extended a first-round pick in its first year since Ezekiel Elliott in 2019.

This more proactive approach could mark a significant shift in contract management under Jerry Jones’ stewardship. Smith, 23, has quickly become an essential figure on the offensive line and keeping him long-term could be vital to Dak Prescott’s protection.

The Cowboys’ rebuild continues as the season approaches

While fans are still debating Micah Parsons’ departure, recent moves reflect a clear strategy of structural renewal. They have already secured Bland and if they complete Smith, they will have secured two young and immediately impactful pieces.

Dallas will begin its regular season on Thursday, September 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 pm (ET) and it will be the first challenge for the Cowboys without their best defensive weapon after his departure to the Packers.
