Colin Montgomerie extends olive branch to Tiger Woods with high praise

Colin Montgomerie has taken a major step toward reconciliation with Tiger Woods after publicly acknowledging that Woods is the greatest golfer of all time, marking a significant shift from earlier remarks he made about his future retirement.

A year ago, Montgomerie suggested Woods should consider stepping away from competitive play.

He said at the time: “I hope people remember Tiger as Tiger was. At Pinehurst, he did not seem to enjoy a single shot. There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye.”

That comment drew widespread reaction, prompting Woods to respond with a pointed remark: “Colin’s not. He is not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do.”

But in a recent interview with Today’s Golfer, Montgomerie took a noticeably different tone, offering a full and direct tribute to Woods and his lasting impact.

When asked who he considers the best European golfer of all time, his reply moved on from Jack Nickalus to Woods: “If you’re talking about the best players, you’ve got to think about major championships, haven’t you?” the Scot said.

“In my view, Tiger was, and is, the best player that’s ever played the game.”

The acknowledgment landed strongly because of how openly Montgomerie once questioned whether Woods should continue competing.

Why the tone changed on Woods

The passage of time and ongoing challenges faced by Woods, including injuries and multiple recoveries, may have reshaped the conversation for Montgomerie.

His determination to compete, even in limited events, has cemented his status in the eyes of fans, executives, and fellow players.

As discussions about retirement and legacy continue to swirl through the sport, Woods remains central to every narrative, proving that his influence on golf is unrivaled and his drawing power untouched.

For Montgomerie, the shift in tone represents more than a softened stance and reflects recognition of dominance across eras. Even world-class golfers such as Rory McIlroy have not got anywhere near Woods’ 15 Majors.

Woods’ record has redefined what is possible in golf and it remains a gold standard for current and future competitors. With his continued absence and recent decline, the lofty heights of his incredible past achievements stand even taller.

A message that resonates across the sport

The comments from Montgomerie have provided a sense of closure to a discussion that once appeared confrontational.

Instead, it now reads as admiration from one decorated figure to another, a reminder that greatness can be acknowledged even after disagreement.

Whether or not Woods returns to the green in due course or transitions into a new phase of his career, his influence is indelible.

At long last, Montgomery’s remarks suggests there should be no argument about the American taking the ‘GOAT’ tag once and for all.
