Chiefs rumors heat up after Mahomes connects with Etienne online

Shortly after The Kansas City Star reported that Travis Etienne Jr. has “legitimate interest” in signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency, Patrick Mahomes began following the Jaguars running back on Instagram.

The timing immediately drew attention across NFL circles. Reporter Pete Sweeney cited sources indicating Etienne’s interest in Kansas City.

The development comes at a pivotal moment for the Chiefs as they reassess their roster after a disappointing season.

Kansas City’s backfield is entering free agency

Both Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco are scheduled to hit free agency. That leaves Kansas City facing legitimate questions at running back heading into the 2026 season.

The Chiefs are coming off their first missed postseason in a decade. According to official NFL standings, it marked the first time in the Mahomes era that Kansas City failed to qualify for the playoffs. For a franchise that built its identity around sustained offensive dominance, the shift has prompted serious evaluation.

Analysts at ESPN and NFL Network have pointed to the AFC’s evolving defensive strength. Contenders now feature faster, deeper defensive fronts. That environment increases the value of versatile backs who can produce in both phases of the offense.

Etienne’s 2025 resurgence strengthens his market

Travis Etienne Jr., selected 25th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Clemson, delivered one of his most productive seasons in 2025.

He surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the third time in four NFL seasons. Etienne recorded 260 carries, 7 rushing touchdowns, 36 receptions, 292 receiving yards, and a career-high 6 receiving touchdowns across 17 games.

Fantasy performance metrics ranked him as the RB10 in half-PPR scoring in 2025, reinforcing his dual-threat value. After earlier career injuries, his full 17-game availability added to his appeal.

For a team looking to regain offensive explosiveness, that production is difficult to ignore.

Why Kansas City is a logical fit

The Chiefs’ offense has historically thrived when balanced. During previous playoff runs, the run game forced defenses to hesitate, opening space for Mahomes downfield.

Adding Etienne would signal a deliberate adjustment. He offers three-down capability and receiving upside that could expand Kansas City’s screen and play-action packages.

The Instagram interaction does not confirm negotiations. Neither the Chiefs nor Etienne’s representatives have issued official statements. However, as Sweeney reported, the running back has “legitimate interest” in joining Kansas City.

The Chiefs are clearly in the market for backfield help.

Free agency will determine whether interest turns into a formal move. Kansas City’s roster decisions in the coming weeks will clarify how aggressively the front office addresses the position.

For now, Travis Etienne Jr. has firmly entered the Chiefs’ offseason conversation.

Sources include reporting from The Kansas City Star, official NFL statistics and standings, 2025 performance data, and publicly available draft records.
