Chiefs reach for risk-laden offensive player in plugged-in NFL mock draft from Peter Schrager

It has been a bit of an odd offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs. The front office was up against the wall due to a rough salary cap situation, but they got out of it by trading away cornerback Trent McDuffie, while letting other defensive backs leave in free agency.

While the team got an additional first round pick from the McDuffie trade, they didn’t necessarily fill enough holes in free agency to take a “best player available” approach in the 2026 NFL Draft. With picks No. 9 and No. 29 in the upcoming draft, the odds are high that a defensive back will be chosen with one of those selections. Many have slotted in LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane at that ninth overall pick, but could it actually be a wide receiver instead?

Peter Schrager’s mock draft has Chiefs selecting Jordyn Tyson 9th overall

Peter Schrager, an NFL insider who only publishes two mock drafts per offseason, dropped his long-awaited predictions this week. Schrager has an interesting player going ninth overall to Kansas City: Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Schrager believes the team needs to help out Patrick Mahomes a little bit more in the wideout room.

“With a top-10 pick for the first time since 2017 — when the Chiefs took some guy named Patrick Mahomes — Kansas City can go in a variety of directions here. Cornerback and edge rusher are certainly options. I still think finding offensive playmakers is a major priority, though, especially with Mahomes coming off the ACL injury. Tyson pops more than any other receiver in this draft class; he just needs to stay healthy.“

In an ideal world, Tyson likely wouldn’t even be an option for the Chiefs at No. 9; his talent suggests he should be a Top 5 pick. But Tyson’s medical concerns have caused his draft stock to plummet in recent weeks. Apparently, though, it hasn’t fallen that far.

Recent reports had Tyson potentially falling to the back half of the first round. Schrager thinks he could still be a Top 10 pick. The Chiefs could certainly use his electric playmaking ability, alongside Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy. Head coach Andy Reid needs more weapons for his offense.
