Chiefs playoff hopes alive: Travis Kelce’s bold statement on turning season around

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t used to life at .500, and the fan base definitely isn’t used to checking playoff probabilities every week. But here they are, sitting at 6-6 and facing the uncomfortable truth that their chances of missing the postseason are currently higher than making it.

Analytics models from ESPN and FiveThirtyEight reflect the same picture: Kansas City is now living on the edge instead of cruising in the AFC.

Still, the tone inside the locker room feels different, at least if Travis Kelce is any indication. On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast with his brother Jason, the All-Pro tight end made it clear he’s not ready to accept any “the sky is falling” narratives.

Instead, he pointed at how close every loss has been, and how quickly those results could flip.

We’re (expletive) this close, man. All our losses are by one score… A handful of plays are deciding everything.

Kelce’s confidence clashes with cold reality

His point isn’t wrong. According to NFL game logs, Kansas City’s margin of defeat sits among the tightest in the league. Their defense remains one of the AFC’s most reliable, ranking top-10 in points allowed, as noted by ESPN Stats & Info. What’s dragging them down is red-zone inconsistency and untimely mistakes, issues Kelce mentioned directly: drops, penalties, stalls inside the 20.

It’s tough to be here at 6-6… We’re fighting for our lives. But we still have a chance, and that’s what matters.

The Chiefs now enter a stretch that gives them no breathing room. Running the table is the only realistic path to staying alive in January. The upcoming schedule lines up the Texans, Chargers, Titans, Raiders, and Broncos, all at home. Some matchups look favorable on paper, but games haven’t followed expectations for Kansas City this season.

Kelce’s message, though, is simple. Fix the small mistakes, flip the close ones, and suddenly everything looks different. Kansas City doesn’t need perfection across the board, just cleaner football in the moments that matter.

Whether that confidence turns into results will define the rest of the Chiefs’ season. With time running out, Kansas City now has to prove that Kelce’s optimism isn’t just talk, but the spark they’ve been missing.
