Chiefs Free Agency 2026: Which players will be available and who are the best options for strengthening the roster?

The Kansas City Chiefs went from being the dominant team to a major disappointment in the last NFL season, which is why this offseason they will be looking to build themselves up in the best possible way to face a new season with renewed expectations and hopes. After several years of competing at the highest level under the leadership of Patrick Mahomes and the offensive scheme of Andy Reid, the team faces the need to rebuild certain areas of the roster.

General manager Brett Veach now has the task of using free agency to strengthen key positions. Kansas City has around $24 million in salary cap space, a figure that could allow for strategic moves if resources are managed well.

A star receiver remains a priority for the Chiefs

One of the most debated topics among fans is the lack of a dominant receiver since Tyreek Hill‘s departure in 2022. Although the team managed to remain competitive and even play in several Super Bowls during that period, the offense showed limitations in 2025.

This is where the name Mike Evans comes up as an interesting option. The veteran receiver could become the primary target on the market. Despite his age, Evans is still a reliable player who generates separation and has sure hands in key moments.

The main obstacle would be the salary. Some projections put his annual value at close to $20 million, a considerable figure for Kansas City. However, if both sides can negotiate a reasonable contract, Evans could become the weapon Mahomes needs to revitalize the passing game.

The ground game also needs help in Kansas City

Another of the weak points that last season left was the ground attack. During several games, Mahomes ended up leading the team in rushing yards, something that reflects the lack of consistency in the backfield.

In this scenario, running back Travis Etienne emerges as one of the most attractive options on the market after his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2025, Etienne accumulated more than 1,000 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, figures that demonstrate his ability to change the pace of a game.

An explosive runner for the attack

Etienne’s arrival could bring dynamism to the offense. His speed and ability to break tackles would fit well in an offensive scheme that often takes advantage of space created by the passing game.

In addition, his presence would allow the attack to be balanced and take pressure off Mahomes, something the team needs if it wants to dominate the conference again.

A key decision in defense

Not all decisions are about external signings. One of the most important issues for the franchise will be the possible renewal of cornerback Jaylen Watson.

After the departure of star Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City’s secondary could be weakened. Watson has become an important part of the defensive system and his continuity would help maintain stability in that unit.

If the team does decide to look for external reinforcements, there are some interesting names at the cornerback position such as Tariq Woolen, Alontae Taylor and Greg Newsome. However, the priority could be to keep the defensive core that has worked in recent years.
