Charlie Woods shows his potential with an outstanding round at the Junior PGA Championships

Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods, demonstrated notable resilience and progress at the 2025 Junior PGA Championship following a disappointing showing at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Competing at Purdue University’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in Indiana, Woods opened the tournament with a one-under-par 70, placing him tied for 43rd out of 156 players. In the second round, he delivered an impressive six-under-par 66, elevating him into a tie for fourth place at seven under par overall-six strokes behind tournament leader Lunden Esterline of Kansas.

Significant Recovery Following Early Tournament Exit

This strong performance contrasts sharply with Woods’ recent outing at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in Dallas, where he failed to make the cut. Playing across Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club, Woods recorded an 11-over 81 in the first round.

Despite efforts to recover in the second round, including playing the front nine in even-par, a bogey on the 17th and a double bogey on the 18th resulted in a three-over 74. The two-day total of 14 over par left him 12 strokes outside the cut line.

Woods had previously competed in the same event in 2024, posting scores of 82 and 80, also missing the cut. His struggles in these national events stand in contrast to his more recent success on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit.

In May 2025, Woods secured his first AJGA title at the Team TaylorMade Invitational at Streamsong Resort in Florida. His rounds of 70, 65, and 66 led to a 15-under total and a wire-to-wire victory. That performance contributed significantly to his rise in the Rolex AJGA rankings, where he is now placed within the top 25 junior players nationally.

At the Junior PGA Championship, Woods‘ second-round performance included nine birdies and only three bogeys. He opened with a birdie on the first hole but dropped a shot on the second. After that, he did not record another bogey until the 16th and 17th holes. The round positioned him well ahead of the 36-hole cut, which includes the top 60 players and ties. A further cut is applied after the third round, narrowing the field to the top 30 and ties.

The Junior PGA Championship serves as a key qualifier for the Junior Ryder Cup. The top two finishers in the event earn automatic selection to represent the United States. Woods is currently within striking distance of one of those positions.

Tiger Woods, a 15-time major winner, was present during Charlie’s recent events. Although the elder Woods never won the Junior PGA Championship himself, finishing runner-up in 1990, his son’s current form suggests growing potential and composure in national-level junior competition.

Charlie Woods’ performance in Indiana marks a significant step in his development, highlighting his ability to rebound from setbacks and compete effectively among the nation’s elite junior golfers.
