Cashman projects Stanton’s return to the Yankees: can he still be a difference maker in New York?

Giancarlo Stanton’s time with the New York Yankees has been defined by ups and downs, interruptions, and unmet expectations. Since arriving from the Miami Marlins in 2017, the slugger has struggled with multiple injuries that have prevented him from maintaining the consistency that once made him shine in Miami. In seven years with the Yankees, he has completed just one full season, and his offensive production has fallen well short of the level that once made him one of the league’s most feared hitters.

As of 2025, Stanton has yet to step on the field due to chronic inflammation in both elbows. However, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman provided an encouraging update on Sunday. In an interview with MLB Network Radio, Cashman revealed that Stanton is nearing a return and could begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks. “He’s scheduled to take live batting practice over the next two weeks,” the executive said, “and after that, we believe he’ll be ready to begin his rehab process.”

Cashman expects a gradual return

Cashman didn’t hide his desire to see Stanton back in the lineup soon, though he emphasized the importance of not rushing the process. “Having him back would be a big boost for us-as long as we don’t lose anyone else along the way,” he noted. His comments reflect optimism, tempered with caution, recognizing Stanton’s recurring injury history that forces the team to proceed carefully.

While Stanton has missed the first part of the current season, his performance in 2024 offered some positive signs. He played in 114 games, posting a slash line of .233/.298/.475 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs. But it was in the postseason where he truly came alive, hitting seven homers in just 14 games, including four in the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians.

Stanton’s return

According to Cashman’s timeline, Stanton could be back by mid-June-a critical stretch of the calendar for a team currently leading the AL East. His return would not only add power to the lineup, but also bring experience to a pivotal part of the season, where every game carries more weight in the playoff race.

As the Yankees aim to stay atop the division and minimize further injury setbacks, having a healthy Stanton back in the fold could make a significant difference. If he can regain his form and stay consistent, the designated hitter could still be a major factor on the road to October.
