The elbow injury suffered by Gerrit Cole continues to make noise and generate regrets in the Yankees environment. The team was left without one of its most important players and has had to adapt in the season. Cole’s contribution was undeniable and both his teammates and fans depended on the role he had. However, in every team a new hero must appear and in this case it was Carlos Rodon who assumed the role.

It’s not easy to take on the role of a team when its star player is out injured, and Rodon knew this very well. The American had been improving his game in 2024 and now it was time to take on more responsibility after the loss of Cole. The left-hander knew that all the spotlight and media pressure was on everyone after the team lost its best player, but he took it calmly and explained that these are things that can happen.

In an interview with The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, Rodon commented that “it’s just one of those things that happens. Obviously, it’s tough not having Gerrit this year. And I wonder, what could have been this year with him? Where would we be now? But that’s in the past now, and it’s behind us.”

Seize the moment

Rodon explained in the interview that the situation for the team has not been easy, but that it is no use dwelling on the past because life and the game go on and you have to know how to represent the team well in adverse situations. In addition, he acknowledged that it has helped him to increase his confidence in his personal level and in the collective.

Rodon’s mentality is based on waiting for opportunities and “being next in line”. The important thing for him is to keep doing his job and comply with everything the team asks of him, leaving the past behind. Rodon has been seen to be more confident, accurate and intense. He is certainly taking advantage of the moment.

Gerrit Cole’s current status

Gerrit Cole’s injury was very complicated and he had to undergo surgery in March. It was a reconstructive operation on his right elbow and it is estimated that he will not be able to play a game until 2026. The wait will be longer than expected, but as it is such a delicate issue, the player will have to go through a proper recovery process in order to return.
