Canelo Álvarez tells Christian Mbilli he still could not beat him even if he was 50 years old

What started as a normal promotional exchange ahead of his September 12 fight against Christian Mbilli quickly turned into one of the most viral boxing moments of the year after the Mexican superstar, Canelo Álvarez, delivered a brutal response directly to his challenger’s face.

Mbilli had been confidently talking about the upcoming fight, insisting that Canelo would see “different things” inside the ring and suggesting that this version of the Mexican champion is no longer unbeatable. But Canelo immediately cut him off.

You’re no Golovkin… if I’m 50 years old right now, you can’t beat me.”

Álvarez was not just trash talking. He was comparing Mbilli to the greatest opponents of his career and making it clear that he does not believe the French-Cameroonian contender is anywhere near that level.

Canelo takes a shot at Mbilli

For boxing fans, mentioning Gennady Golovkin carries enormous weight. Golovkin was not just another rival in Canelo’s career. He became one of the defining opponents of an entire boxing generation. Their trilogy created years of controversy, pressure, and debate, and many fans still argue about the outcome of their first fight.

At the time, Golovkin was considered one of the most feared fighters in the world. His power, pressure, and relentless style pushed Canelo into some of the toughest moments of his career. That is why when Canelo stared at Mbilli and told him, “You’re no Golovkin,” it felt like a complete dismissal of the challenger’s status.

Part of the tension surrounding the exchange comes from the fact that Mbilli has openly suggested in recent months that Canelo is no longer at his peak. The undefeated challenger believes age is finally beginning to affect the Mexican champion and sees this moment as the perfect opportunity to shock the boxing world.

Christian has repeatedly spoken confidently about his power, his pressure, and his ability to put Canelo in uncomfortable situations. At 30 years old, he enters the fight undefeated and fully aware that beating Canelo would transform his career forever.

One of the most striking aspects of the viral interaction was Canelo’s body language. While Mbilli appeared emotional and intense, Canelo looked calm, relaxed, and almost amused during the exchange. Videos showed him speaking with complete confidence while barely changing his expression.

Because throughout his career, Canelo has built a reputation for maintaining emotional control before major fights. Whether against Floyd Mayweather, Golovkin, Dmitry Bivol, or Terence Crawford, he rarely allows opponents to visibly affect him during face to face exchanges.

Despite his confidence, this fight arrives during a complicated moment in Canelo’s career. The Mexican superstar is still dealing with criticism and questions surrounding his recent performances, especially after the loss to Terence Crawford. Some fans believe age, physical wear, and years of elite competition are finally beginning to affect him.

Because once words like these are exchanged publicly, they tend to stay in fighters’ minds long after the press conference ends. And that can work both as motivation to come out aggressively and as something that creates doubt or even fear in an opponent. That is why this unexpected “punch” from Canelo seems to have landed hard.
