Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Jake Paul are two of the most prominent names in boxing today, albeit for vastly different reasons. That’s why Paul spent months pursuing a fight against Alvarez, but when a more lucrative offer emerged, Canelo wasted no time in turning his back on Paul.

Paul dedicated over a year to chasing a fight with Alvarez. The American fighter flooded social media with posts and made numerous statements in interviews, relentlessly pressuring Canelo for a confrontation that would undoubtedly boost their bank accounts.

Following his victory against the legendary Mike Tyson last November, the “Problem Child” intensified his efforts to secure a bout with Canelo. At one point, it seemed the fight was inevitable. However, everything changed when Turki Alalshikh entered the picture, prompting the Mexican champion to abandon the rumored agreement with Paul.

Canelo’s easiest decision yet

In a recent interview with Mike Coppinger of “The Ring,” Alvarez reflected on his decision to step away from the fight with Paul after signing a four-fight contract with Alalshikh’s Riyadh Season. When asked how easy it was to make that choice, Canelo responded confidently.

“You know, it’s very easy when they know you, when you know the people,” Canelo said. “It’s very easy because both parties are good to go to work. They are happy, I’m happy, and that’s all that matters,” explained the 36-year-old fighter.

At this stage in his career, Alvarez emphasized the importance of having a clear plan for the future. “Obviously, you need to work and win the fight. But yeah, it’s nice to have a four or five fight deal. You already know what’s next.”

What lies ahead for Canelo?

Canelo’s first fight under the Riyadh Season contract is scheduled for May 3 against William Scull at the ANB Arena. However, the bout that Alalshikh and countless fans are eagerly anticipating is against American Terence Crawford, set for September 25 in Las Vegas.

And what about Jake Paul? In his signature cryptic style, Canelo has hinted in interviews that a fight with Paul could still happen once his Riyadh Season contract concludes, possibly in 2026. If the fight materializes, it would undoubtedly be a ratings sensation and one of the most financially rewarding matches of Alvarez’s career.
