Canelo Alvarez ‘cedes’ his place to Jaime Munguia for world championship

Terence Crawford took three world championships from Canelo Alvarez by defeating him by unanimous decision in September in Las Vegas.

A few weeks ago, The Bud announced his retirement from boxing, leaving the WBC, WBO and IBF belts vacant.

International Boxing Federation orders Saul Alvarez vs Osleys Iglesias

A few days ago, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) spoke out about its super middleweight title and requested its top-ranked fighter Osleys Iglesias (14-0,13KOs) and Saul Alvarez (63-3-2, 39KOs), the third in the list, to begin negotiations for the title at 168. The organization does not have a second in the ranking, which is why Canelo is eligible for the vacant belt.

But Alvarez is not in a position to fight because he is recovering from elbow surgery, so the next in the rankings would be the one designated for a possible fight. And that name is Jaime Munguia (45-2, 35KOs), who is looking to be champion again after achieving it in 2018, but in the super welterweight division.

We worked very hard to get Iglesias to number one. I think he deserves it; he fought (Vladimir) Shishkin (in an eliminator) and beat him convincingly. We hope that the IBF will respond quickly and send a letter to the next available contender, who happens to be (Jaime) Munguia, we’ll see what he says

Will there be a Jaime Munguia vs Osleys Iglesias fight?

It would now be Jaime Munguia’s turn to decide, as he has not fought since May after defeating Bruno Surace in the rematch and testing positive for alleged doping, a result he appealed and won.

“We want to know who will accept the fight… It seems to me that the IBF understands that this is a process that should be expedited. We want Osleys to get in the ring as soon as possible. They gave Canelo three days and got the answer. Hopefully they will receive another letter for Munguia.

“What I can tell you is that Osleys is willing to fight anyone, no exceptions. He is willing to fight any name. He is very happy to fight for the IBF world title,” said Camille Stephan, president of promoter Eye of The Tiger, to The Ring.
