Can Kylian Mbappé join the GOAT conversation with another World Cup title?

The debate over football’s greatest player of all time has long revolved around legends such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But as the next generation takes center stage, a new name is forcing its way into the conversation: Kylian Mbappé. The burning question now is whether another World Cup title would be enough to elevate him into that exclusive GOAT discussion.

Mbappé‘s résumé is already remarkable for his age. He played a central role in France‘s triumph at the 2018 World Cup and delivered one of the most memorable individual performances in history during the 2022 final, scoring a hat trick and nearly carrying France national football team to back-to-back titles. Few players have had that level of impact on the sport’s biggest stage so early in their careers.

Winning two World Cups put Mbappé in another level

Winning a second World Cup would place Mbappé in extremely rare company. Multiple World Cup titles are a defining marker of greatness, achieved by only a select group of players across generations. It would strengthen his case not just as the best player of his era, but as one whose success translates consistently on the global stage under the highest pressure.

However, the GOAT conversation has never been defined by a single achievement. While international success carries enormous weight, it is only one part of a broader evaluation that includes club dominance, longevity, consistency, and individual accolades. Players like Messi and Ronaldo built their legacies over more than a decade of sustained excellence, breaking records year after year while leading their teams to domestic and continental titles.

For Mbappé, the path to that level of recognition requires more than adding another World Cup trophy. It also involves continued success at the club level, particularly in competitions like the UEFA Champions League, where defining moments often shape how careers are remembered. His individual production-goals, assists, and influence on matches-must remain elite for an extended period if he is to match the longevity of the players he is chasing.

Mbappé has one big advantage

That said, Mbappé has one advantage that previous contenders did not always possess: timing. He is entering his prime at a moment when the global spotlight is firmly on him as the face of the next generation. If he continues to deliver in major tournaments and leads France to another World Cup, the narrative around his career will shift dramatically. Instead of being viewed as a future contender for greatness, he would be seen as actively building one of the most accomplished careers in football history.

There is also the stylistic factor. Mbappé‘s combination of speed, finishing, and big-game composure makes him uniquely suited for tournament football. He has already shown that he can dominate against the best teams in the world, and another World Cup run would reinforce the idea that he is one of the most decisive players of his generation when it matters most.

Still, the GOAT debate is as much about perception as it is about statistics. Fans and critics often weigh different factors differently, from individual brilliance to team success. Even with a second World Cup, Mbappé would not automatically surpass the established legends in every argument. What it would do is remove any doubt that he belongs in the conversation.
