It has been just over two weeks since September 13, 2025, a day that will be remembered as one of the saddest in Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez’s career. The Mexican stepped into the ring at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, to defend his super middleweight titles against Terence Crawford, who had moved up two divisions (168 lbs) to face the Jalisco native.
Despite the jump in weight, Terence Crawford gave Canelo Álvarez a boxing lesson from start to finish, and the three judges scored the fight: 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113. This took place in a packed Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, where Canelo lost his undisputed super middleweight crown-a reign he had held for years.
Will there be a rematch? That’s what everyone is asking, but Terence Crawford was so dominant that it would be very risky for Saúl Canelo Álvarez to face him again immediately. The Mexican will have to think carefully.
Caleb Plant drops a hint and wants Canelo
On November 6, 2021, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez faced and defeated Caleb Plant via technical knockout in the eleventh round. In that fight, Canelo unified the four major super middleweight belts (WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF) and became the first undisputed champion in the history of the division.
Four years after that fight, Caleb Plant believes he can still compete at 168 lbs and could therefore be an option to face Canelo again. However, this option would be complicated, as many rivals want a shot at the Mexican.
“I feel like the super middleweight division is in a great spot,” Plant told The Ring recently. “A lot of big names, a lot of big fights that can be made. I feel like I’m still here at the top.”
However, on May 31, Mexican José Armando Reséndiz pulled off one of the biggest surprises of his career by defeating Caleb Plant via split decision in Las Vegas, capturing the WBC interim super middleweight title. So a high-profile fight for Plant would be very complicated.
