Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate sets off alarms as WNBA free agency nears

What the Indiana Fever were able to accomplish in 2025 with Caitlin Clark sidelined was truly remarkable. Clark was expected to take a major leap in her second WNBA season, but a multitude of injuries never allowed her shine when on the court, sidelined her for tons of games and ultimately led to her being shutdown for the rest of the season.

Despite that, the Fever kept chugging along, making the playoffs and reaching the semifinals before coming up against the eventual champions, the Las Vegas Aces. In order to fill the void left by Clark, the Fever relied on several role players who stepped up in her absence. But it was Kelsey Mitchell, who has been with the Fever since 2018, who truly shined.

Mitchell has always been a steady scoring presence, but she reached a career-high 20.2 points per game in 2025, shooting over 45% from the field and nearly 40% from the perimeter. Mitchell’s stellar season has made her an immediate priority ahead of the 2026 season. Fever head coach Stephanie White has already publicly declared they need to bring her back, but the impending free agent could seek greener pastures.

Kelsey Mitchell’s social media post has Fever fans wondering

While it seems like both sides want to work something out to keep Mitchell in Indiana, a recent social media post from the player has gotten fans a little bit worried about that possibility.

Overreacting fans believe Mitchell could be talking about potential contract negotiations with the Fever. But in reality, WNBA free agency hasn’t even begun yet. Teams can’t negotiate with unrestricted free agents until January 21. And players can’t sign until February 1.

Mitchell’s post could mean something, but it could also mean absolutely nothing. Given how long Mitchell has been with the Fever, and how adored she is by her coaches and teammates, odds are she will be back with Clark this upcoming season.
