With the start of the 2025 Major League Baseball season just around the corner, the goal of any team is to win the World Series and it should be a shared dream for any player, but it is a goal that in reality is within reach of few. The Philadelphia Phillies can be counted among this select group of contenders, with Bryce Harper as the main figure to seek glory.
The two-time National League Most Valuable Player knows the Phillies have a team capable of competing, but he was willing to sacrifice his position to give depth to the lineup if they could attract the best first baseman available on the winter market
“I talked to the team this offseason about that, just in case there was a guy available at first base that we needed to have, that we needed to get,” Bryce Harper said about the sacrifice he was willing to make and added: “I would be more than open to that if we had a guy like that, who was going to change our lineup or change the attitude of our team.”
Bryce Harper wanted Pete Alonso on the Phillies
One of the last elite players to leave free agency this offseason was Pete Alonso, who eventually accepted a proposal to stay with the New York Mets, and Harper explained that he saw him as an option with whom the chances of reaching the World Series could be enhanced.
“When Pete Alonso was still on the block, I sat there and thought, ‘Hey, why not?'” Harper said of the idea he shared with the team about what he was willing to do. “They like me at first base. But I’d go out there to have a guy who played first base and hit 35 or 40 home runs.”
The strength of the Phillies to be contenders in the 2025 season is their rotation led by experienced pitchers such as Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez, plus the addition of Jesus Luzardo this offseason and will be completed by young Andrew Painter.
On offense, Bryce Harper will be joined by Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos and Alec Bohm, if they stay healthy, a lineup that will also include Bryson Stott and, with Pete Alonso, would have a more powerful batting quota to seek the dream of the World Series.
