Bruce Bochy could be living his last days as a manager: rumors of his retirement increase

Bruce Bochy, the current manager of the Texas Rangers and one of the most respected figures in recent Major League Baseball history, may be considering ending his distinguished career at the end of the 2025 season. At least that is what recent rumors suggest within the MLB environment.

Journalist Jim Bowden wrote in his column for The Athletic:

There is a lot of noise in the industry that Braves manager Brian Snitker and Rangers manager Bruce Bochy could retire at the end of the season, which would be a huge loss for the sport

Jim Bowden

At 68 years old, Bochy is not the oldest manager in activity as figures such as Dusty Baker or Ron Washington are 74 and 73 years old, respectively, and continue to lead their teams, which makes the possibility of his retirement even more unexpected.

More so when Bochy was recently voted by the players themselves as the manager they would most like to play for, according to an anonymous survey conducted by The Athletic.

Bruce Bochy’s career

Bochy’s career is remarkable, and after his spells with the Padres and Giants, with whom he won three World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014, many thought his cycle as a strategist had come to an end.

However, in October 2022, he accepted the challenge of managing the Texas Rangers, a team that was coming off a tough season with a 68-94 record. Just one year later, Bochy led Texas to its first World Series title in 2023, overcoming the Astros and further cementing his legacy in baseball.

Currently, the 2025 season has not been easy for the Rangers, especially on the offensive side. However, it is unclear whether these challenges are influencing Bochy’s possible decision. So far, neither the club nor the manager himself has confirmed or denied the rumors.

Who will be the Rangers’ new manager?

If he does retire, the Rangers may already have a possible successor in-house, as Skip Schumaker could take over. The former Miami Marlins manager, who was recognized as National League Manager of the Year in 2024, currently works with the Rangers in an advisory role.

With a modern style of management, experience in developing young talent and knowledge of the Texas system, Schumaker could represent a natural transition should Bochy step away from the dugout.

Is Brian Snitker retiring?

In parallel, Brian Snitker, manager of the Atlanta Braves and another of the names mentioned by Bowden, is also considering retirement. Snitker, 69, has a 764-620 record and has guided his team to six division titles, a National League championship and a World Series

If both players decide to close out their careers at the end of this season, it would be a sad end to the baseball season as it says goodbye to two greats leaving an enormous legacy in the ball game.
