Bronny James shines in G-League as Lakers recall him amid injury crisis

Despite the Lakers’ recent loss to the Clippers, Bronny James continues trending upward. The rookie guard delivered another strong performance in the G-League, helping the South Bay Lakers secure a 131-119 victory. His steady play, combined with mounting injuries for the senior roster, opened the door for a return to the NBA rotation.

The Lakers officially announced Sunday night that Bronny was being recalled to the main roster. The move follows Saturday’s alarming moment when Luka Doncic exited early after colliding with Clippers guard Bogdan Bogdanovi. Doni limped through the remaining first-half minutes but was ruled out of the game shortly after halftime, widening L.A.’s growing injury gap.

With Austin Reaves sidelined for three games due to a calf issue and Gabe Vincent unavailable for the upcoming Suns matchup, the team needs healthy bodies – and Bronny has earned another shot.

Bronny continues G-League development

Bronny James didn’t post video game numbers, but his G-League outing showed continued growth. Against the Wisconsin Herd, he scored 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, got three triples, and added five assists plus three rebounds. His activity level and floor spacing continue to trend in the right direction.

He wasn’t alone in South Bay’s win:

  • RJ Davis erupted for 25 points (9-of-15 FG)
  • Kobe Bufkin added 23 points (9-of-16 FG)

Bronny’s G-League averages also reflect progress. Across six appearances, the 21-year-old guard is averaging 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, showing improved playmaking and defensive intensity. Shooting numbers still need improvement 35.6% FG, 21.2% from three, but the consistency of reps matters more for his development.

The Lakers originally expected Bronny to carve out meaningful minutes this season, especially after a promising summer showcase. However, he’s only played 13 NBA games and averages just 9.5 minutes per appearance. His recent demotion back to the G-League matched the pattern of his rookie year, but circumstances have shifted quickly.

LeBron James urges resilience through adversity

With injuries stacking up, LeBron James has become the vocal anchor of this battered Lakers roster. On Saturday, the team shot just 6-of-38 from deep and struggled to create offense without key rotation pieces. Doni finished with 12 points and appeared fatigued before exiting.

Still, LeBron emphasized professionalism and readiness, a message that resonates especially with Bronny now back in the fold.

No matter the circumstances, it’s next man up.

LeBron said.

Whoever is in uniform, we have to execute, stay connected, and be ready.

That message may double as guidance for his son: if opportunities return, Bronny must capitalize and carve out a role beyond garbage-time minutes.

Whether head coach JJ Redick gives him a consistent chance remains to be seen, but the pathway is open. And for Bronny James, momentum is finally building at the right time, just as the Lakers desperately need support.
