Brian Schottenheimer responds after George Pickens claps back at Richard Sherman

The Cowboys’ 44 to 30 loss to the Lions on Thursday didn’t simply fade away after the final whistle. What started as a tough night on the field quickly turned into a wave of conversation online, fueled by George Pickens and a few pointed comments from Richard Sherman.

Sherman, now a media voice after an All-Pro career built around sharp instincts and even sharper words, didn’t hold back. He criticized what he viewed as a lack of urgency from Pickens during key moments of the game. Pickens didn’t appreciate the assessment. On Instagram, he pushed back, reminding Sherman that football is a team sport and accusing the former Seahawks star of being defined by the Legion of Boom. The posts disappeared soon after, but not before igniting a bigger discussion.

Pickens is in the middle of his best season yet. His 1,179 receiving yards currently place him second in the NFL, according to league stats confirmed by NFL.com. That production is a major reason why the Cowboys rely on him so heavily, which only magnified the attention on his response.

This is a team game… I’m not the only one on the team. stop becoming a analyst and talking about one player when he playing a teams game

Pickens’ posts shift the Cowboys’ focus off the field

By Friday morning, Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was already being asked about the situation. He kept his tone steady while acknowledging he planned to speak with Pickens. Schottenheimer said he didn’t see the lack of effort Sherman claimed and wanted to make sure the young receiver was doing alright.

Sherman, meanwhile, brushed off the entire exchange. He noted that at the same point in his own career he had already collected multiple First-Team All-Pro honors and reached a pair of Super Bowls. Those achievements are well documented in league records from 2012 to 2014, when Sherman helped lead Seattle’s dominant defense.

I’m aware of what was supposedly put out there… I’ve not talked to him yet. I understand it’s been taken down but I will be talking to him, just checking on him. Again this is unfortunately things that we deal with in this profession… I have not spoken to him, but I will.

The back-and-forth highlights a growing trend in the NFL. Current players are increasingly vocal online, and former stars in the media are more willing than ever to call them out. Analysts such as Ryan Clark and Emmanuel Acho have recently pointed out on ESPN and FS1 that this kind of tension is becoming part of the modern landscape around the league.

For Dallas, the real challenge now is keeping the conversation centered on their season instead of their social feeds. Pickens’ play on the field has carried them through tough moments. Schottenheimer’s next step is making sure nothing digital distracts from what’s ahead.
