Brian Schottenheimer explains why he removed Matt Eberflus from the field

The Dallas Cowboys’ season has been a true rollercoaster. The team has had both resounding victories and crushing defeats, with the defense being questioned every other game. Amid this worrying situation, head coach Brian Schottenheimer had to make a drastic decision.

The Cowboys’ defense has left much to be desired this season. It ranks fourth-worst in average total yards allowed at 374.9 per game, in addition to having given up 50 touchdowns.

If that weren’t enough, it is the worst pass defense and 18th-worst run defense, allowing 254.8 and 120.1 yards per game, respectively.

While the offense led by quarterback Dak Prescott is among the best in the NFL, the defense hasn’t been able to find its rhythm. This prompted a desperate move by Schottenheimer and Eberflus.

Last week’s 34-26 loss to the Minnesota Vikings proved to be the breaking point. Following the defeat, Schottenheimer reassigned Eberflus to the boxes.

“At the end of the day, we all understand we need to play better defense. That’s no secret,” Schottenheimer admitted in an interview with 105.3 The Fan, as reported by Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“Nobody has shied away from that-certainly Matt hasn’t,” Schottenheimer emphasized. “As we looked for options and ideas, it was something Matt and I talked about.”

“There’s no question you can see things better up in the box,” Schottenheimer explained. “You can make quicker adjustments right there in the box.”

He added: “When Matt and I talked through this, it became very clear that’s where we want to put him, so we can make adjustments faster. I think it’s going to be a great thing for us.”

With only three games remaining, a 6-7-1 record, and slim playoff hopes, Dallas is willing to try anything to spark improvement.
