Brian Schottenheimer challenges Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Jalen Hurts with a bold statement about Dak Prescott

Brian Schottenheimer believes Dak Prescott is performing at a level unmatched by any quarterback in the league, putting his own star passer above Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts.

The Dallas head coach made that claim following Sunday’s dramatic tie against the Green Bay Packers on September 28, as the Cowboys endured a grueling 40-40 contest at AT&T Stadium.

Their first tie since 1969 and second overtime game of the 2025 NFL campaign, but despite the outcome, Schottenheimer underscored his faith in Prescott, highlighting not only his efficiency but also his leadership.

“I think it was a four-point lead,” Schottenheimer said when explaining a critical fourth-down decision. “They had a four-point lead. So, you go for it there, because if you don’t make it, you know, and you can hold them to a field goal, you’re still down seven.

“I really like the play call. I like the way Dak was playing. I mean, if there’s a better quarterback playing right now than Dak Prescott in the league, I’d love to see him.

“But, just a lot of confidence in our offense. It’s great when you have the trust in those guys, and then they reward you with some of those decisions.

“But we knew if we could get to really, we were talking about four or less, or three or less of that situation … we were going to go for it.”

Prescott delivered one of his finest games of the season, completing 31 of 40 passes (77.5 percent) for 319 yards and three touchdowns, while avoiding turnovers. His 124.9 passer rating was accompanied by a rushing score.

It’s the 22nd time in his career he has accounted for both a passing and rushing touchdown in the same game, and that total is now the highest in Cowboys history and ranks tied for third among NFL quarterbacks since 2016.

Dallas defense falters against Packers

The team’s offense spread the ball effectively with the 32-year-old at the helm as George Pickens filling in for the injured CeeDee Lamb, registered 134 yards and two touchdowns, becoming Dak’s most reliable option downfield.

Whilst Jalen Tolbert added 61 receiving yards, while tight end Jake Ferguson contributed 40 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Javonte Williams continued his consistent form with 85 rushing yards at an average of 4.3 per carry, including a touchdown of his own.

Dallas executed well in critical areas, scoring on four of its five trips inside the red zone and producing 436 total yards of offense, and the Cowboys also controlled possession for over 34 minutes.

The problem for the team actually came on the other side of the ball. Green Bay‘s offense capitalized on nearly every opportunity, scoring on all four of its second-half drives and in overtime, totaling 27 points after the break.

Jordan Love matched Prescott statistically, throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, showing that whilst the Cowboys‘ offense turned up, the defense couldn’t step up on the night.
