Brian Schottenheimer breaks silence on Trevon Diggs rumors

Trevon Diggs’ season has been anything but smooth. The Dallas Cowboys opened 2025 with confidence, yet Diggs found himself battling inconsistency, unclear injuries, and a sudden dip in form. Six games played, no interceptions, and a surprising benching early in the year created the sense that something behind the scenes was going wrong. The rumors only grew louder once people started talking about tension between the cornerback and new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

The situation got even murkier when Dallas placed Diggs on injured reserve before Week 7 without a clear explanation. Reports suggested he suffered a concussion in a strange accident at home, which raised more questions than answers. At the same time, Diggs made it clear he wasn’t thrilled with Matt Eberflus’ defensive scheme, especially the reduced man coverage. What was supposed to be his comeback from the 2023 ACL injury suddenly spiraled into a confusing midseason story.

Still, things look different now. Diggs is expected to return this week against the Detroit Lions, and Schottenheimer finally decided to shut down the relationship drama during an interview on 105.3 The Fan. He explained that he and Diggs have a solid bond and that any talk of conflict comes from people who do not understand how real conversations inside an NFL locker room sound.

I think you know Trevon and I have a really good relationship… But like I said, some people don’t like people that have real, authentic hard conversations. But I love Trevon, and I think there’s definitely a mutual respect there.

A turning point for the Cowboys defense

The Cowboys defense has quietly been building some momentum. Over their last three wins, they have held opponents to 21.6 points per game. Stats from ESPN and Pro Football Reference back up that improvement, showing Dallas trending toward a top-tier defensive efficiency ranking. The addition of Quinnen Williams has also earned praise from several NFL Network analysts, who say his presence has steadied the defensive front.

Now the secondary might finally get its missing piece back. Todd Archer of ESPN reported on X that Diggs has looked sharp in practice, although Schottenheimer wants to finalize his status only after talking with the medical staff. The Cowboys officially opened Diggs’ 21-day window to return, which almost always signals that a player is close.

Team owner Jerry Jones added even more optimism during his own appearance on 105.3 The Fan, saying Diggs wanted to suit up last week and should be ready for Detroit unless something unexpected happens.

He wanted to be on the field last night, but he’ll be on the field in Detroit, in my view, barring the unexpected

Jerry Jones

If Diggs returns anywhere near his old form, the Cowboys could be setting themselves up for a strong final push. After weeks of uncertainty, Dallas may finally be getting stability at exactly the right time.
