Brian Daboll sends benched Russell Wilson out as captain, raising questions inside Giants camp

Just days after demoting Russell Wilson in favor of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, Brian Daboll has made another bold move – and it’s already stirring more controversy.

Ahead of the New York Giants‘ Week 4 clash with the Los Angeles Chargers, Daboll sent out Wilson as one of the team’s game captains, alongside Brian Burns and Darius Slayton. This, despite Wilson no longer holding the starting job.

The decision was shared publicly by Pat Leonard of NY Daily News Sports, who wrote, “Brian Daboll sends out backup QB Russell Wilson out as a game captain with Brian Burns and Darius Slayton despite benching Wilson for Jaxson Dart.”

This unusual move adds another layer of confusion to a team already facing serious questions behind the scenes.

Quarterback switch highlights deeper internal divide

The Giants have long emphasized a collaborative relationship between head coach Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. But the sudden quarterback switch appears to have fractured that unity.

Sources inside the organization were reportedly blindsided by the benching of Wilson, which Daboll took full responsibility for – a notable departure from the typical shared messaging seen in NFL leadership.

Adding to the tension, insiders suggest Schoen has the trust of team ownership, while Daboll is becoming more isolated. A recent report claims, “Daboll seems to clearly see that. And in the last few days, he has started to air out the organization’s dirty laundry.”

These developments come at a critical point for the franchise. With Dart – Schoen‘s handpicked future quarterback – now leading the offense, the move could either spark a turnaround or further expose the cracks forming behind closed doors.

If the team’s performance doesn’t improve, a difficult decision may lie ahead for ownership. Right now, the signs suggest Schoen holds more sway – and Daboll could be running out of time.
