Brian Cashman and the Yankees forced to act for coveted Japanese pitcher

The Yankees are going through a decisive offseason, as although they are still linked to big names, the room for maneuver is reduced as time goes by and the urgency to finalize signings increases.

At the center of the conversation is a Japanese pitcher who many are already comparing to Yoshinobu Yamamoto: Tatsuya Imai.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs are ramping up the pressure and forcing Brian Cashman to make quick decisions.

Tatsuya Imai is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher for the Saitama Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB)

Tatsuya Imai has become one of the most attractive arms on the international market. His recent performance in Japan has piqued the interest of several Major League Baseball teams, including the Yankees, who are in urgent need of bolstering their rotation.

Last season, Imai posted a 10-5 record with a 1.92 ERA in 24 starts, accumulating more than 160 innings. These numbers explain why his name is becoming more and more popular in MLB offices and why his decision, expected in the coming weeks, is generating so much excitement.

From the analysis environment, it has been pointed out that in the Bronx they not only see him as a future bet, but also as an immediate solution to cover the first months of the season, while some of their figures return from injuries.

Rotation doubts force Cashman to act

The need for a reliable starter was heightened by the uncertainty surrounding Gerrit Cole, who did not play in 2025 after undergoing surgery, and Carlos Rodon, who could miss the start of the campaign. Even when both return, there is no guarantee that they will be at their best.

This scenario makes Imai’s possible arrival more than a luxury: for many, it is a strategic priority if the Yankees want to remain competitive from April.

Cubs press and raise the cost

The big obstacle for the New York team is the competition, as the Chicago Cubs are very active and, according to reports, would be willing to go beyond their usual comfort zone in years and money to secure the Japanese pitcher.

With a projected contract of less than $200 million and salary cap space available after recent moves, Chicago has a strong case to make. For the Yankees, the message is clear: it’s now or never.

The bullpen, an equal or greater concern in the Bronx

If the rotation raises doubts, the bullpen offers no greater peace of mind. In recent seasons, the Yankees’ relievers have been among the least effective in the league, and the recent departures of key arms have left significant gaps.

Although there is optimism with some internal pieces, the reality is that there are no guarantees. The front office knows it needs at least one additional reliable reliever to avoid repeating the problems of the past. Real aspirations to compete in 2026 hang by a thread, an unacceptable situation for a team like the Yankees. The margin for error is getting smaller and Brian Cashman knows this better than anyone.
