Brett Favre provides health update one year after Parkinson’s diagnosis

NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre recently offered a heartfelt and troubling update on his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease.

A year after going public with his diagnosis, the former Green Bay Packers quarterback is facing new challenges that reflect the unpredictable nature of the illness.

Appearing on The Sage Steele Show, Favre opened up about how his condition has progressed and what people often misunderstand about it. While many associate Parkinson’s with shaking and tremors, Favre says his experience has been vastly different.

“Everyone attributes Parkinson’s with shaking,” he explained, “but I have rigidity and stiffness more than anything.” This stiffness has compounded old injuries on his right side, where joint issues already existed from his playing days. The result is a daily struggle to move comfortably.

Perhaps even more concerning is the effect Parkinson’s has had on basic bodily functions, most notably, swallowing. Favre shared that he now sometimes feels like he’s choking, which doctors have linked directly to his condition.

“It’s scary because they can’t fix that,” he admitted. The unpredictability of when these moments strike adds another layer of stress to an already difficult situation.

Managing the symptoms and reflecting on life

To help manage his symptoms, Favre relies on medication every four hours. While the treatment doesn’t cure the disease, it helps reduce the severity of the worst symptoms.

“I can only imagine what I look like, but I feel like a pretzel,” Favre said. “Everything is so rigid. I take the medicine and 20 minutes later, at least in my mind, it’s like a totally new body.”

Despite his efforts to stay optimistic, Favre couldn’t help but draw a somber comparison to his late father, who passed away at 56 from a heart attack.

Now 55, Favre acknowledged the emotional weight of nearing that same age milestone. “I’m almost there,” he reflected. “But I’ve taken way better care of myself, even though football wasn’t exactly gentle on the body.”

While Favre remains committed to his health, his story underscores how even world-class athletes are not immune to the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s. His transparency also helps shed light on a less visible side of the disease, one that doesn’t always manifest in the obvious ways.

As Favre continues to face this fight head-on, his journey serves as both a sobering reminder and a powerful example. Living with Parkinson’s may be a daily battle, but by sharing his truth, Favre is helping others understand the full scope of what it means to live with this condition.
