The debate over Neymar’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered a new chapter. And this time, it’s in favor of Santos’ No. 10.
Young Brazilian tennis star João Fonseca has backed Ney, arguing that his experience could be crucial to the Canarinha’s success in soccer’s biggest tournament.
Fonseca wants to see Ney at the World Cup
With 67 days to go before the start of the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, Neymar’s participation remains uncertain.
Joining the many calls for Carletto to bring the star back to represent Brazil is the 19-year-old tennis rising star, who is preparing to compete in the Monte Carlo Masters 1000:
“I do believe Brazil can have a good World Cup. I’m in favor of Neymar going to the World Cup because his track record and experience would be an extra factor. Obviously, I’m not the biggest soccer expert-it’s just my opinion-but I’m definitely rooting for Brazil to win the championship,” he told ESPN (via OneFootball).
Although João has stated that he “is not a soccer expert,” he has made a name for himself in the tennis world. He is ranked among the top 25 in the world and has two titles, the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires and the ATP 500 in Basel, in addition to being nominated for the 2025 Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award.
Meanwhile, Fonseca’s comments come amid intense debate in Brazil. Neymar has not been called up recently by coach Carlo Ancelotti, due to doubts about his physical condition and consistency following injuries.
As ESPN recently reported, the Italian coach has practically finalized the 26-player roster that will represent the Verdeamarela, and the name of the #10 does not appear on it.
Despite these circumstances, Fonseca’s support reflects the sentiment of a segment of the public and Brazilian sports figures who believe that the experience of the legendary No. 10 could be a key asset for the national team in its quest for a sixth World Cup title, much like Mourinho, Romario, Ronaldo Nazario, or Cafú.
Meanwhile, the final decision rests with Carletto, who is set to announce the final World Cup roster on May 18.
