One of the great figures of the Canadian team, Max Scherzer, who already has his place in the Hall of Fame assured, is close to returning to the mound after a long injury absence.
Although Scherzer has only played one game this season with the Blue Jays, the team has managed to remain competitive and is currently in second place in the American League wild card race after 75 games.
What happened to Max Scherzer?
Scherzer, 40, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, made his only appearance on March 29 against the Baltimore Orioles. On that occasion, he allowed two runs in three innings and threw only 45 pitches before leaving the game with discomfort and inflammation in his right thumb, as well as a right forearm injury.
When will Max Scherzer return?
After being on the 60-day disabled list, the right-hander is reportedly close to rejoining the team, as according to Keegan Matheson, Toronto manager John Schneider confirmed that Scherzer will throw his next bullpen session a day later than planned as a precaution.
“Max Scherzer will do his bullpen session tomorrow, not today,” Matheson said. Schneider explained that the team is taking precautions and decided to give him an extra day of rest, taking advantage of the way the rotation is set up for next week.
Scherzer is expected to make his next start between Tuesday and Thursday of next week against the Cleveland Guardians. Although he is not yet ready to make 100-pitch outings, he would be able to throw around 75.
How are the Blue Jays doing in MLB?
Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the Blue Jays in February and his absence has conditioned Toronto as the rotation has been limited since his departure in late March.
Toronto is 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the battle for second place in the American League East and three games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.
