Bills find their AWOL cornerback, Darius Slay, 891 miles from the stadium

The Buffalo Bills have finally found their long-lost wide receiver. The team claimed veteran Darius Slay off waivers in early December, but hadn’t seen him until today, 861 miles from where he was supposed to be.

Slay is a 13-year veteran who began his career as the 36th overall pick in the 2013 draft by the Lions. After leaving Detroit in 2019, he played five seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Although he put up good numbers, the Birds decided to release Slay a month after playing in Super Bowl LIX. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to a one-year, $10 million contract in the offseason but waived him on December 2.

The Bills wasted no time and claimed the veteran almost immediately. However, Slay never showed up in Buffalo, which played its wild-card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars today.

Slay was far from Jacksonville at game time

While the Bills were vying for a spot in the divisional round at EverBank Stadium, television cameras captured the star cornerback arriving at Lincoln Financial Field to watch the Eagles face the San Francisco 49ers.

The footage shows the Super Bowl LIX champion entering the stadium to a warm welcome from the crowd. However, he would likely have preferred to be on the field rather than in the stands.

“Big Play” Slay has declined to comment on his situation with the Bills, but his actions speak louder than words. Insiders claim the Eagles were considering bringing him back.

Could Slay return to Philadelphia?

“Slay is honored that a first-class organization like the Bills claimed him,” his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

According to Rosenhaus, Slay “is going to take some time away from football right now and decide in the next few days if he wants to keep playing.”

Press reports indicate that the Eagles wanted to bring Slay back, but the Bills beat them to it. Now, it remains to be seen how his falling out with Buffalo will end to determine if he will be able to return to Philadelphia next season.
