The differences between Oscar de la Hoya and Bill Haney are more than evident, to the point that the now boxing promoter and the father of Devin Haney were close to coming to blows a few days ago.
Security elements had to intervene to prevent a confrontation, and the fight reached social networks, when the Golden Boy blocked Haney from his X account, according to the super lightweight fighter’s father.
“Oscar blocked me, but he can’t block the truth,” Bill Haney wrote on his X account. The post included a screenshot of the “block” message: “@OscarDeLaHoya has blocked you”.
The fight between Canelo and Crawford, the trigger
Since the fight between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Bud Crawford was announced, boxing promoter Oscar de la Hoya has been against the fight for several reasons.
His argument is mainly based on the following facts: firstly, while Crawford is 37 years old, Canelo is about to turn 35 in July.
Secondly, Crawford’s last fight was nine months ago. Although he won, the fight against Israil Madrimov was a very close contest. So, when he faces Canelo, it will have been more than 12 months since his last fight.
De La Hoya commented that Canelo’s recent fights have also been disappointing. The Olympic gold medalist asked: “Can someone explain to me why this is the ‘biggest fight in boxing’?”
Bill Haney’s response to De la Hoya’s questioning
The boxer’s father’s response was blunt when he posted: “Turki just made the biggest fight in boxing, Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford. Everyone is watching now”.
The dispute on X invariably generated a series of comments with boxing fans supporting one or the other, but especially talking about the fight to be held in September between Canelo and Crawford.
In the end, time will tell whether Haney was right and Canelo and Crawford put on a worthy show in the boxing world, or whether De La Hoya’s comments were not just because of the rivalry he has had with the Mexican fighter since the split between the two.
The truth is that, whichever way you look at it, the long-awaited fight has given a lot to talk about… and there’s more to come.
