Players to Watch in USA vs. Australia
Folarin Balogun (United States) starred in the U.S.’s 4-1 win over Paraguay, scoring the country’s first World Cup brace since 1930. With Christian Pulisic unavailable, Balogun will be counted on to lead the American attack once again.
Weston McKennie (United States) will be a key presence in midfield as the U.S. looks to build on its dominant opening performance. His work rate, physicality, and ability to drive play forward will be especially important without Pulisic.
Nestory Irankunda (Australia) made an immediate impact in Australia’s shocking 2-0 upset of Türkiye, scoring one of the goals that put the Socceroos level with the U.S. atop Group D. The dynamic attacker has the pace and creativity to trouble any defense.
Connor Metcalfe (Australia) also found the net against Türkiye and was instrumental in one of the biggest upsets of the opening round. The midfielder’s energy and ability to arrive in dangerous areas make him a player the U.S. will need to track closely.
