Bad Bunny challenges Canelo Alvarez and WBC ‘names’ him number one contender: “Start getting ready, daddy!”

The professional boxing scene experienced an unexpected moment after Bad Bunny, one of the world’s most influential artists, made a provocative statement: “I have the punch to knock out Canelo”. He said it in a relaxed tone, but with the confidence of someone who believes in his strength, during a conversation with Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos. The phrase lit up social media and caused a stir not only among reggaeton fans, but also in the boxing world.

The Puerto Rican singer’s comment pointed to an eventual fight with the winner of the highly anticipated bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Terence Crawford, scheduled for September. Although he lacks professional experience in the ring, Bad Bunny’s audacity was enough to elicit serious… and not so serious reactions.

The CMB responds

Far from ignoring the comment, Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), responded directly to the artist, combining humor with a touch of formality. “Dear Benito, I want you to know that the WBC is going to rank you as the number one contender for the winner of Canelo vs. Crawford. Start getting ready, daddy!”, Sulaiman said in a message that quickly went viral.

Although the statement was evidently a joke, it also reflects how the show has begun to blur the lines between sport and entertainment. Sulaiman even acknowledged that a fight against Canelo represents a huge media showcase, but reiterated that the WBC maintains strict criteria for approving official fights.

Bad Bunny and his experience in the ring

The idea of seeing Bad Bunny in a ring is not so far-fetched when you consider that he has already participated in sporting events such as WWE. His performance at WrestleMania 37 surprised many with his physical prowess, discipline and charisma, which elevated his image even in the sporting world.

Although stepping into a professional boxing ring is another level, the artist has shown that he likes to push boundaries. And in an era where celebrity fights have gained ground, the possibility, as far-fetched as it may seem, cannot be completely ruled out.
