Austin Reaves refutes Shaquille O’Neal’s prophecy with a historic night

The Los Angeles Lakers faced the Dallas Mavericks in the emotional return of Anthony Davis to the place he called home for six years and where he won the 2020 championship. The moment carried undeniable weight, as the crowd welcomed the former Lakers star with a heartfelt ovation that echoed throughout the arena.

Davis was returning after missing 14 games, and although his minutes were limited to avoid any risk, he delivered a solid performance. On the other side, Luka Doncic was also facing his former team, creating a mix of emotions for both players as they stepped onto the court once again in a familiar setting.

One would think the storyline would revolve around those two stars and their shared history. However, the night ultimately belonged to Austin Reaves, who emerged from what seemed like a quiet, overlooked corner to become the brilliant force that carried the Lakers in a game that felt his unmistakably.

Reaves finished the night against the Dallas Mavericks with 38 points, surpassing Luka Doncic, who posted 35. Moreover, Austin delivered precisely when his team needed him most, going 12-of-15 and 6-of-8 from deep, displaying remarkable poise and efficiency.

The second half was where the Lakers’ guard shone brightest. Nineteen of his 38 points came during that stretch. And just one day before LeBron James was set to make his season debut, Shaquille O’Neal issued a prediction that was far from flattering for Reaves.

He can play, but when the big man comes back, everything shifts back.” And in case his message wasn’t clear enough, the 52-year-old added what he described as the street version: “I’ma put it in street terms. While the O.G. in jail, you’re running s-. But as soon as he comes back home, you understand what I’m saying?

Shaquille O’Neal

That wasn’t all. Shaq continued with more comments aimed at the 27-year-old guard.

I kinda feel for Austin ’cause he looks good. He’s playing good. But when LeBron – when they have their full team come back, he’s gonna be reverted to standing in the corner, taking last-second threes.

LeBron James had a strong performance, as he routinely does, but Reaves kept pace, making it clear that his talent is equally vital for the Lakers’ lineup.

Austin Reaves draws attention around the NBA, even if Shaq downplays him

Luka Doncic’s arrival to the Lakers seemed like a potential threat to Reaves and his role, yet alongside James he has found ways to contribute with memorable plays, leaving alley-oops and no-look lobs on the court.

Doncic and Reaves share similarities in their style, though both have defensive shortcomings, which is why they rely heavily on teammates such as Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart.

Their skill sets are beginning to complement one another, helping the team find the stability that now places them second in the Western Conference.

Reaves’ talent continues to flow naturally, fitting in like water. Game after game, he proves he is indispensable to the team.
